Usher is one of the most famous singers and performers of the past decade, but all the fame in the world likely wouldn't have saved his stepson from a tragic boating accident that dealt such violent head trauma that he has been labeled "brain-dead" by his doctors.
The 11-year-old boy is from Usher's last marriage, which ended in 2009. He took care of the boy for eight years and, according to those close to Usher, was very close to his young stepson. It is unknown if the 11-year-old will survive - he is considered to be in serious condition following the boating accident.
The boy was inter-tubing with a 15-year-old girl from the back of a pontoon. A family friend who was taking them out for a day on the water also rented a jet ski, which he was riding around. Something clearly went awry (though details are unclear at this point), because the family friend crashed into the 11-year-old with the jet ski.
The 15-year-old girl suffered some minor injuries and a broken arm. She and Usher's stepson were airlifted to a nearby hospital in Georgia.
While the incident is still under investigation, it is known that the family friend that was looking after the kids rented both the pontoon and the jet ski. He took responsibility for those vehicles; and while it seems that the unfortunate wreck was truly an accident, the person in charge should have been especially cautious driving such a powerful machine near these kids.
As the renter of the boat and the jet ski, the man was responsible for both children. If it is found he was negligent during the lake trip, he would likely be held liable in a civil lawsuit.
